Paddington’s steep, narrow streets and heritage terraces make it one of the trickier Sydney suburbs to learn in — which is exactly why a good driving school for beginners in Paddington needs an instructor who can break big, intimidating tasks into small, manageable ones. That’s Julia’s entire approach. She’s been teaching for more than 23 years, holds full RMS accreditation, and takes every single lesson herself, so you always know exactly who’s in the car with you.
Paddington’s terrace houses were built long before anyone owned a car, which means on-street parking is scarce and hard-won, and its hilly, undulating streets mean hill starts come up in nearly every lesson, not just the ones where you’re practising them deliberately. Add in Oxford Street’s steady stream of buses and shoppers, and new drivers need genuine competence in lane changing and merging before they can drive here with any confidence. Julia covers all of it, including her well-known reverse parking method that works in any vehicle, on any street, even where there’s a curve or a tree in the way.
If you’d like a clear roadmap, Julia’s ten-lesson course moves logically from car control and observation, through steering, roundabouts and hazard awareness, to freeway driving, hill starts and full test preparation. If you already know what you need — say, just reverse parking, or a refresher after a long break — lessons can be tailored to exactly that instead. Every student takes home free written notes, diagrams and short videos to reinforce what was covered.
Many of Julia’s Paddington students are adults revisiting driving after years away, or learners who found their first instructor impatient or intimidating. Julia is calm, softly spoken and unhurried by design, and also teaches learners with autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, anxiety, and a history of road trauma, as well as overseas licence conversions and workplace driver training. She’s a registered NDIS provider for anyone needing that support.
Julia teaches Monday to Friday, 6.30am to 8.30pm, with weekend lessons by request, and can arrange pickup and drop-off wherever suits you in Paddington. Standard lessons are $145 an hour, with a prepaid 10-hour package (five two-hour lessons) available for $1395. Call or SMS 0435 071 232 to check availability — Paddington bookings tend to fill fast in school holiday periods.
Prefer manual? Julia can teach you in your own manual car; her own vehicle is a 2021 automatic Hybrid Corolla fitted with proper rod-style dual controls.
